lost in the fire

I lost my ring last week.  Not my engagement/wedding ring, mind you.  It’s actually worse than that: I lost the ring that we couldn’t afford when we got engaged or married, the special 5th anniversary ring my hubby surprised me with when he said he’d been saving money to buy a “guitar”.

You’re probably thinking, “Oh, that’s tough!  I know others who have lost their rings too. You have a good excuse, though, being so busy with three kids, making it easy to forget where you leave things!”  Yeah, that would sound understandable, except that it wasn’t the busy-ness of motherhood that made me forgetful this time… It was pride and anger.

How so?  Well, on that fateful day, I was very moody (aka pms-ing).  Usually when I’m at that stage hormonally, I prepare myself by acknowledging that I will probably “feel” like things are bigger deals than they actually are.  I normally decide early on in the day to reject the lies that “I deserve better treatment” or “everyone’s out to make my day terrible”, and decide to not attack verbally or become super-defensive about things.

However, on this particular day last week, I felt those thoughts coming early on in the day, but I didn’t totally reject them.  Some of them I’d even let marinate for a while. At first I didn’t act on them outwardly, but I did let them grow inside my mind and heart.  Every little thing that bothered me all day stayed with me.  I basically wanted to feel mad at certain times during the day and there was a chemical relief in that, so as long as I didn’t hurt anyone with my words or actions, what difference did it make?

Deep down I knew better, I knew that was playing with fire and that each time I accepted the temptation it would get harder and harder to reject the next one.  But my own pride blinded me and I thought I was immune to anything really significant.

By evening, my mood swings were pretty insane; I had allowed them to continue to a point never before reached, not even during any of my pregnancies and post-partum experiences.  After being relatively happy and friendly for a couple of hours, I was infuriated by something my hubby did.  Honestly it wasn’t anything major by normal standards and definitely not worth getting upset about, but because by that point everything was personal and magnified to 1000%, I lost it.  Literally, because at some point in the next 30 minutes, I misplaced my ring while washing dishes or changing my clothes or something else that I did and cannot remember, and still have not found it. I didn’t throw it anywhere out of anger, but when I took it off that evening (I don’t sleep with that ring on) I placed it somewhere and now have no idea where that was.

But it didn’t end there.  When confronting my husband about the situation later that night, he responded well and left it there… But that wasn’t enough for me: by that point I needed a fight, I had worked up to that all day.  There was a voice telling me that he didn’t understand me the way I needed to be understood in that moment, and I decided to listen to that voice.  So, I exploded, not physically or with yelling but with words, many words that I felt were my right to express, though deep down I doubted if they were really true.  Despite the warning signs, I voiced them anyway.  And I hurt my husband, badly.

Though by this point I definitely deserved a taste of my own medicine, my husband didn’t pay back evil with evil. He didn’t attack me but he also didn’t give in to my manipulative emotional demands.  He quietly spoke the truth again and left it at that.  And at that moment the veil was torn and I saw myself clearly for who I had been that day and what I had allowed into my heart and mind.  In rebellion and pride I had accepted a lie and acted on it.  I had taken baby steps throughout the day playing with fire and then believed it couldn’t burn me.  But it did.

The effects of my thoughts/actions/reactions could have had a devastating effect on our marriage.  Though sometimes I think of myself as strong and above certain things, God in His grace showed me how vulnerable I am and how dangerous it is to let my guard down, entertaining tempting thoughts and lies.

The most amazing thing to me about that day was God’s grace shown to me through my husband.  He blessed where he could have cursed.  Because of that, last week’s fire burned but did not destroy: it was a refining fire, removing the worthless and purifying the precious, as with gold.

Speaking of gold, right now I’m staring at my bare ring finger that should have a white gold band around it with a beautiful diamond.  But whether or not I ever find my ring again (I really hope so!), this is a good visual reminder of what can be lost if not careful, but mostly how blessed I am through grace.

break-time for the mind

Most mornings, my husband and I send our two oldest kids to a break-time in their rooms for between 30-45 minutes.  This is unrelated to any “time-outs” for disobedience: it simply gives our daughter some alone time and helps our son settle down for a bit, both of which allow for much more enjoyable play afterwards (smile).  I usually use that time to get something else done around the house, but if it’s too tiring to be up on my feet, then I generally write emails or get something else done on the computer.  It’s usually a productive time: something gets “checked off” the list.

However, I’ve come to the realization (with my husband’s help) that I don’t know how to rest.  Oh, I tell my children that I need a break when we’re wrestling and I’m getting tired.  And some days I decide that instead of sweeping the floors while the kids are sleeping, I need a nap too.  But in both of those cases all I’m admitting is my physical exhaustion.  What I don’t know how to do is to turn off my mind, take a break from thinking or analyzing or stressing or planning or trying to figure out how to get everything checked off of my never-ending to-do list….

I used to think I was pretty laid-back, because I don’t have an apparently endless supply of energy and I’ve never been the type to be go-go-going, physically running around all of the time.  I look pretty calm on the outside for being a mom of three.

But within the past year especially I’ve realized that I’m a workaholic: when it’s not physical work, it’s mental.  And it just does not stop.  I don’t even rest that much when sleeping because I dream all night long, and I wake up tired a lot from all of the “work” I did in my dreams (smile).  Even on vacation my husband had to keep telling me to relax and not get stressed about planning and to organizing “fun” family activities!

I’ll be honest with you: though I’ve told him many times over this past year, “I have to stop needing to think so much! It’s too exhausting!” I haven’t actually done anything significant to try to take mental breaks or truly disconnect on a regular basis.  Except in situations where my husband has specifically told me, “OK, no more analyzing right now. You need to rest your mind a bit!” I just haven’t really seen the need to disconnect.  Why not?  Well, because, at least subconsciously I’ve considered it a strength.  There is so much I can do, think through, plan, help with, analyze… I don’t want to stop the wheels from turning and lose momentum!”

But really, that’s arrogant and foolish, thinking that it’s somehow my job to handle it all without putting time aside for really taking a break and resting.  Like the world is going to fall apart if I stop analyzing for a bit and just enjoy life.  And by mental break I mean that, for instance, I should be able to play something simple with my children without needing to analyze at the same time what their abilities should be in that type of play before they start kindergarten and whether I’m on track preparing them for that.  Or, that I should be able to enjoy watching a concert or TV show at night with my husband without needing to plan the next day in my mind right in that same time-frame.  “There’s a time for everything…”

There’s a verse that says, “Be still, and know that I am God…” (Psalm 46:10), and I have usually thought of that in times of reading and prayer, encouraging me to be quiet in His presence.  But, looking at the context, that whole psalm is actually talking about how God is our refuge and our fortress, how we don’t have to fear because He will make wars cease (in my mind too, I assume) and He will be exalted in the whole earth.  So in light of that, a paraphrase of verse 10 could be, “Relax! Remember that I’ve got it covered!”

So, I’m going to start putting into practice a “break-time” each day (like the time we make our kids take), where there’s nothing on the agenda, nothing to get checked off or analyzed, just relaxing, chilling and enjoying life.

And the reason why I wanted to share these thoughts this week is because this Sunday is Easter.  This is a clear reminder that God has already accomplished it all and purchased that freedom for me (including freedom from worry and stress)!  Jesus sweated blood so I don’t have to; Jesus was separated from the peace and joy of the Father so I never need to be; Jesus died for my sins so that I can live in victory; Jesus rose from the dead conquering the lie that my future is uncertain.

I can rest because my Savior lives!

change is in the air… in the frozen food section

On my trip to the grocery store a few days ago, I was surprised to see that they were in the process of changing the whole place around!  Good thing I was there during a time of day when it wasn’t very busy at all, because the few of us who were there ended up wandering around, confused, trying to find the items on our shopping lists in the new, incomplete, currently-very-messy setup.  So, inspired by that shopping experience (yes, frozen green beans can serve as inspiration for writing), here are some thoughts on change, applied personally:

·         Don’t freak out when change is messy, because many times it just is.  So, simply take a deep breath and get to work!

·         Don’t give up on someone who hasn’t figured out how to restock all of their personal shelves after their latest adjustments…  Don’t rub the mess in their face, but instead be a patient friend who encourages and comes alongside with kind words, practical advice and helping hands.

·         We shouldn’t tell people we love “Don’t ever change! You’re perfect the way you are!”  Love shouldn’t be contingent on change but real love desires the best for the other, which should include growth, because let’s face it, nobody’s perfect.

·         If someone seems to have it all together and under control in life, perhaps it’s because he/she is staying where it’s comfortable and safe rather than seeing the need to grow and be challenged in new ways.  It may be nice and clean and predictable, but great personal opportunities are lost when there is an unwillingness to leave the comfort zone.

·         Just because change can be a very positive and necessary thing doesn’t mean that we should settle for and accept just any change.  Good thought and wisdom should go into the “what” and “how” of making necessary adjustments whenever possible, especially to avoid over-correcting and swinging the pendulum too far the other way instead of finding a healthy, well-balanced middle ground.

·         Don’t believe the lie that you need to change and attain some sort of perfection in order to be accepted or have value.  Your true value and acceptance don’t come from what you can accomplish but rather from Who made you.  And you have incredible worth in His eyes!

·         Don’t use your God-given worth as an excuse to settle for comfort or consider personal growth unnecessary…  Instead, use that unconditional love as a motivator to examine yourself honestly, see your faults, recognize bad habits, and take steps to keep growing and changing in those areas, not to earn love but because you already are loved.

·         The constant changes needed to keep growing in life make for a very messy hike, but I hear that the view from the top is spectacular and well-worth all of the effort!  :-)

To wrap things up, a note to self: avoid, whenever possible, going to the grocery store when they are refurbishing and shifting everything around.  Because quite frankly, it was a huge hassle and headache, and since they didn’t need my help with making those changes, I would’ve been better off waiting for a day or two until the shelves were at least stocked.  ;-)

decide amar
